Chocolate Cake Recipe #3
1 May 2014
This is the first recipe that pops up when you search chocolate cake recipe on good ol' google so I had to give it a go plus it is Mary Berry's chocolate cake recipe. I love Mary Berry (for those not familiar she is a household name in the UK, a food writer and tv presenter best known for The Great British Bake Off).
Ingredients
50g/2oz cocoa powder
6 tbsp boiling water
3 free-range eggs
4 tbsp milk
175g/6oz self-raising flour
1 rounded tsp baking powder
100g/4oz baking spread or soft butter
300g/10oz natural caster sugar
For the icing I made a chocolate fudge type icing - you can see it here.
Anyhow, I gave this recipe a go and I must say - I was a bit disappointed but this has more to do with my equipment and/or skills or lack of I should say. Without a food processor it is quite difficult to get the cocoa and boiling water into a smooth paste which then led to a grainy mixture. Don't get me wrong, the cake was still good but was just lacking that richness for me.
I asked the chocolate cake tasters (my sister and her boyfriend and my hubby) who were here at the time what they thought and everyone enjoyed it but not as much as chocolate cake #1 which I made again for my Dad's birthday.
I am going to bake another couple of chocolate cakes I think and then share my verdict but at the moment there is a clear favourite!
I rate this cake 7/10.
Happy Baking!
